July is UV Safety Awareness Month
IT’S FINALLY SUMMER!!!
It’s that time when we spend much of our time outdoors. Many activities include swimming, partying, hosting outdoor cookouts, going to the beach, and spending time with friends and family. However, knowing the benefits and dangers of being under the sun is essential. You can enjoy the outdoors with minimal hassle by learning to protect yourself and your family from ultraviolet (UV) radiation.
The great, big ball of fire provides us with many benefits:
- Enhances Moods
- Improves Eyesight (unless you stare at it)
- Improves Sleep
- Stimulates Vitamin D production
Vitamin D, widely known as the “sunshine vitamin,” is a crucial prohormone that the body produces when our skin is exposed to UV light from the sun. It has multiple roles in the human body:
- Promotes Bone Health
- Strengthen Muscles
- Reduces Depression
- Boosts the Immune System
- Lowers the Risk of Cancer
Although being out in the sun is very healthy and beneficial, too much exposure can negatively impact your health. Even if it is cloudy, UV radiation is still at risk. High exposure to UV radiation can cause the following side effects:
- Skin Damage
- Dehydration
- Heat Stroke
- Skin Cancer
- Cataracts and Blindness
- Early Aging, Wrinkling, and Loss of Elasticity in Skin
Protecting yourself by using sunscreen, wearing sunglasses, and monitoring the time you stay in the sun is crucial. In addition, it is vital to keep hydrated during the hottest time of the year.
