September is National Yoga Month
For over a decade, the month of September has been used to educate the general public about the vast field of yoga and inspire people to live a healthy lifestyle. National Yoga Month is an observance and celebration of the physical, emotional, and mental benefits of yoga. According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH), many people who practice yoga do so to maintain their health and well-being, improve physical fitness, relieve stress, and enhance their quality of life.
Derived from the Sanskrit word “yuji,” meaning yoke or union, yoga is an ancient practice that brings together mind and body. It teaches individuals the importance of slowing down and trying to remain present. Who is Yoga for? EVERYONE! Yoga offers an excellent opportunity to enter flow, the state of being fully engaged and present in the moment with no attention paid to the time passing. Practicing yoga can help people cultivate mindfulness, develop greater awareness, and improve their ability to focus on what is at hand.
Benefits of Yoga:
- Yoga improves strength, balance, and flexibility - Slow movements and deep breathing increase blood flow and warm up your muscles while holding a pose builds up strength.
- Yoga benefits heart health - Regular yoga practice may reduce levels of stress and body-wide inflammation, contributing to healthier hearts.
- Yoga relaxes you and improves sleep - Studies show that a consistent bedtime yoga routine can help you get in the right mindset and prepare your body to fall and stay asleep.
- Yoga can help with more energy and brighter moods - You may feel increased mental and physical energy, a boost in alertness and enthusiasm, and fewer negative thoughts/feelings once practicing yoga routinely.
- Yoga helps you manage stress - According to the National Institutes of Health, scientific evidence shows that yoga supports stress management, mental health, mindfulness, healthy eating, and weight loss.
- Yoga connects you with a supportive community - Participating in yoga classes can ease loneliness and provide an environment for group healing and support. Even during one-on-one sessions, loneliness is reduced as you are acknowledged as a unique individual, being listened to and participating in the creation of a personalized yoga plan.
