Coconut Creek wants to recognize exceptional yards; therefore, is seeking nominations
for the most beautiful yards and those that have been designed in an environmentally-friendly
manner. For those who have gone beyond the necessary landscaping requirements, the City of
Coconut Creek will be accepting applications for our second annual Landscape Award Program.
Last year’s program was so successful that it is being expanding to include businesses as
well as residential properties. Additionally, Home Depot has agreed again to sponsor the
event and will be providing gift certificates to the winners. The deadline for submission
is December 17, 2007 with the winner(s) being announced in early 2008.
Any Coconut Creek residential or commercial property owner can apply. Nomination forms
can be downloaded by clicking HERE or can be picked-up
at City Hall (4800 West Copans Road). Another option is to e-mail
landscapeaward@coconutcreek.net with the following information: photos,
brief description of the yard, name of property owner, property address, and nominee’s contact information.
Submission of entry forms is complimentary.
“The Coconut Creek Landscape Award Program was initiated to recognize residents who have not
only met all the necessary landscaping code standards but have worked hard to make an aesthetically
pleasing yard. We hope that this program will spark friendly competition within the city
neighborhoods and help educate residents about our minimum landscaping requirements,” stated Todd
DeJesus, Planning Projects Coordinator, City of Coconut Creek.
For the 2006 program, City representatives conducted a technical review in addition to an aesthetic
review of each yard nominated. Five Coconut Creek residents were awarded plaques and certificates at
a Commission meeting in recognition of their exceptional yards. Cheryl Bibbee and Fred Grant focused
their efforts on creating a butterfly garden in their front yard and Stephen and Tammy Hauskins’ yard
won for their native hammock of slash pines surrounded by decorative rocks and waterfalls. The couples
tied for top honors. Penny Burkhardt and David Hall received honorable mention. “We were very excited
to win this award. My husband Steve takes a lot of pride in his yard; sometimes he’s out until 11:00 pm
working on it. The trees are like his babies,” stated Tammy Hauskins.
