Local Flood Hazard Information
In 1968, Congress passed the National Flood Insurance Act, which created the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). This program provides federally backed flood insurance to communities that agree to adopt and enforce floodplain management ordinances that reduce future flooding. In 1990, the Federal Insurance Administration (FIA) implemented the Community Rating System (CRS), which provides incentives for communities to go beyond the minimum floodplain management requirements to develop extra measures to provide protection from flooding. According to the Insurance Services Office, the City saves residents approximately $150,000.00 annually in insurance premiums.
