School Board Boundaries Update

The Broward County School Board has decided to reconfigure school boundaries that directly effect residents of the City of Coconut Creek. Kids living South of Copans Road, in the South Creek area, Centura Park and parts of the Township scheduled to attend Lyons Creek Middle School in 2009/10 are now constrained to attend Margate Middle School. The School Board did not provide due process to parents, city officials or Coconut Creek educators during this course of development. The School Board has been asked to delay the process for one year.

You are encouraged to attend the next School Board Public Hearing.

Please wear YELLOW or GOLD shirts to the meeting!

March School Board of Broward County Meeting:
  • 2nd Public Hearing on Boundaries
    March 25, 2009, 5:30 PM
    Plantation High School
    6901 NW 16th Street
    Plantation, 33313
Issues/Speaking Points Developed by Boundary Team:
  • City and residents affected by this redistricting not given “due process” and timely communication regarding this change.

According to the School Board and documented as "completed".

    • A Community Orientation was completed sometime between August & November – a time certain date in which this occurred has not been provided and the community was not informed.

    • School Board Workshop on State Plant Survey Impacts held Nov. 6, 2009; School Board Workshop on Concurrency and Class Size Impacts held on Nov. 12, 2008; School Board Boundary Data Workshop III held Nov. 25, 2008 – information on these meetings was not provided to the community.

    • Boundary Conferences/Informational Meetings to be held by Dec. 9, 2008 – conference not completed for Lyons Creek Middle; community was not notified of such meetings; 1st meeting for Coconut Creek Elementary PTA/SAF held on January 6, 2009

    • School Board Capacity Workshop IV and Superintendent’s initial Boundary Recommendations held December 11, 2008 – Coconut Creek left out until January 9, 2009

  • Lack of similar academic and extracurricular programs at Margate Middle as compared to Lyons Creek

  • 75% of those students redistricted into Margate Middle have indicated that they will opt out into a magnet program or school of choice

  • School Board boundary staff not allowed to meet with Coconut Creek Staff to discuss growth and development issues in City affected by the redistricting

  • The requested one year delay will provide appropriate due process and evaluations of programs at Margate Middle

  • There may be a better alternative with the Deerfield Beach – Deerfield Beach Middle Option B discussed with School Board Staff

Updates will be posted on this site on a regular basis.
