Coconut Creek Building New Boardwalks
 February 04, 2008
Under the watchful eye of Coconut Creek’s Public Works Department, two exciting boardwalk projects have been started in the City. The Winston Park Nature Center Boardwalk (5201 N.W. 49th Ave.) will be expanded an additional 300 feet to provide further passive recreation opportunities. The boardwalk will end with a wildlife overlook where residents and visitors can enjoy bird watching or simply have a place to unwind within this twenty five (25) acre preserve. This project is currently under construction and should be completed by April 2008. The existing boardwalk will be closed during construction.
At Sabal Pines Park (5005 NW 39th Ave.), a new boardwalk will be created in the western section of the park and will allow visitors to access a beautiful wetland partially surrounded by a pine forest. This project is scheduled to be completed by June 2008. There are many additional exciting plans in store for Sabal Pines Park. A small portion of the park’s western section has been re-landscaped with a much larger landscaping effort planned in the near future utilizing primarily native species. A formal butterfly garden with a trellis will be created and landscaped with numerous butterfly attracting plants. The City will be utilizing a new pervious recycled rubber and aggregate product for the creation of a jogging/nature path through the preserve. Western portions of the park may be closed off periodically during construction of these improvements.
“The projects reinforce the City's commitment to enhancing its natural resources by providing opportunities for ‘up close and personal’ experiences in these preservation areas, hopefully developing a greater appreciation for our native landscape,” stated Scott Sundermeier, Director, Public Works, City of Coconut Creek.
