NO to Landfill Increase

January 22, 2000

Landfill PhotoDuring a Commission meeting held in January 2008, Coconut Creek City Commissioners passed a resolution opposing Waste Management Inc.’s (WMCD) application to extend the height or width of the landfill facility located directly east of the City of Coconut, on the east side of the Florida Turnpike.

The City of Coconut Creek and surrounding cities have experienced years of foul odors, air pollution, visual pollution, and litter as a result of its proximity to the landfill and has expended its resources responding to citizen’s concerns.

On October 18, 2007 and revised on November 6, 2007, WMCD filed a Rezoning Application with the Broward County Board of County Commissioners to amend its Ordinance to increase the height of its landfill from 200 feet to 280 feet. This proposed rezoning will also be applied to the Broward Interim Contingency (BIC) landfill in South West Broward County at U.S. 27 and Sheridan. The City of Coconut Creek and its residents do not believe there is a convincing argument to increase the present height/capacity of the landfill and make the pollution levels worse than its current state.

“We have an obligation to protect our resident’s health, welfare and safety, therefore we strongly oppose any expansion of this eyesore of a landfill,” stated Lou Sarbone, Mayor, City of Coconut Creek. “An 80 foot expansion is equivalent to an 8 to 10 story building, and for that reason we encourage our residents and surrounding cities’ residents to contact their Broward County Commissioners to inform them that they too are against this proposed development.”
