On October 13, 2007, the Sun-Sentinel printed misleading information regarding available federal aid to low income families whose homes are still damaged from Hurricane Wilma. The City of Coconut Creek did receive a grant through the federal Community Development Block Grant Recovery Initiative Program.

The City of Coconut Creek directed funds towards purchasing generators for evacuation shelters within the city- the Coconut Creek Community Center and the Fire Station.
