March 14 - Referendum to Amend City Charter

Your vote counts. Here is your opportunity to vote on four proposed amendments to the City Charter.

These recommendations were made by the City’s Charter Review Board, a group of five residents appointed by the City Commission. The referendum election is planned for March 14, 2006.

Here is a summary of the proposed amendments:

Amendment 1:
This amendment would allow City residents who are qualified voters and have resided for a minimum of 12 months in any land areas annexcd into the City to qualify as a candidate for the City Commission.

Amendment 2:
This amendment would extend the term of office of City Commissioners from three to four years, and it would extend the terms of the three City Commissioners elected on March 8, 2005, one additional year.

Amendment 3:
This amendment would extend the time period in which a special election following a vacancy on the City Commission must occur from 120 days to 180 days.

Amendment 4:
This amendment would extend the minimum time period for the required appointment of a Re-districting Board from three years to five years.

All registered voters are encouraged to participate in the referendum election on Tuesday, March 14th. Polling locations will be open from 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM.
