Coconut Creek is CERTIFIED!
 June 17, 2005
On Wednesday, June 15, 2005 the City of Coconut Creek was officially designated a Community Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation (NWF). Coconut Creek is the first city in Florida (11th in the country) to receive this special honor.
After registering with the NWF program in October, 2004, staff and resident volunteers have worked rigorously to meet the necessary criteria in order to achieve certification. Various programs were initiated such as our Wildlife Gardening Series. Many residents have attended classes that focused on butterfly gardening and how to create wildlife habitats. Along with the Kids Ecology Corps we have visited over 700 students in our local schools in order to educate them on environmental issues and wildlife habitat. Booths were set up at our annual Butterfly Festival and Free Tree Giveaway to educate everyone about the project and its benefits. Additionally, over 160 homes have been certified as backyard wildlife habitats (and 5 schools). We want to thank all the residents who have taken the time to embrace this program, apply for certification, attend the classes and get involved. There is a greater sense of community because of this program. Coconut Creek has shown that is an environmental leader in not only our county but in the state and nation. Everyone who contributed something towards the City’s certification should be proud.
These programs won’t stop just because we have been certified. Our next Wildlife Gardening Class is coming soon – check the Community tab of this web site for additional information. We are still working with our schools to provide fun, educational classes for the children and create wildlife habitats on the campuses. We encourage people to certify their yards and are available to help with the process.
A community celebration is being planned. We will provide additional information once the event has been arranged.
Great work everybody!
