March 8 - Municipal Elections

January 01, 2005

The City will hold an election on Tuesday, March 8th, to elect the Commissioner for the Commission seat in District C. The candidates for the seat in District C are the incumbent, Marilyn Gerber, and Patricia L. Duaybes. The County also will hold a County-wide referendum to decide whether or not slot machine gambling will be held in Broward County.

Two City Commission seats were decided at the end of the candidate-qualifying period on January 18th when Commissioner Jim Waldman, the incumbent in Commission District E, was re-elected unopposed. Also, Wynmoor resident Leonard Freund was elected unopposed to the seat in District B. Congratulations to Commissioner Waldman and Commissioner-Elect Freund!

It is important to note that, although the each Commission seat represents a particular District (A, B, C, D, or E), voting in the City is at large; that is, all residents who are registered voters can vote for one candidate in each Commission race. However, as stated above, in the forthcoming election on March 8th, District C is the only Commission seat with a contested race.

February 7, 2005, is the last day for residents to register to vote in the March 8th election. Information regarding Voter registration, and absentee ballots may be obtained by calling 954-357-7055. Early voting using the iVotronic voting units will begin on Saturday, February 26th, at locations listed on the Broward County Supervisor of Elections website.

Following the election, the Commission will hold its annual organizational meeting on Thursday, March 10th. At that meeting, all three Commissioners will be sworn into office and the Commission will select a Mayor and Vice-Mayor who serve a one-year term until March, 2006.

Following the March 8, 2005h election, the next regularly scheduled City election is in March, 2007, at which time an election for the seats in Commission Districts A and D will be held.
